Glass Scratch Repairs
Scratches can ruin glass surfaces, causing your picture window to look cloudy or your car windshield to look dull and discolored. It’s important to understand how to repair scratches on glass, because it can save you time and money. Luckily, it’s easy to do glass scratch repairs with household products or even your favorite toothpaste!
How do you fix a scratch on a mirror?
Start by assessing the depth of your scratches. Run your fingernail along the surface of the glass to feel for any grooves. A light scratch will feel smooth, while a deep scratch will cause your fingernail to catch or get stuck in the groove. Deeper scratches will need professional attention, such as a glass repair expert, to restore the appearance of your glass.
You can also try using a metal polish product to sand and buff out glass surfaces, such as brasso multi-purpose metal polish. The polish will softly sand and brighten the glass, but is less likely to damage or scratch it. To use, apply a small amount of polish to a cloth or cotton ball, rub it over the scratched area and then wipe off the excess with another clean cloth.
You can also buy a glass scratch filler kit that will include a polishing compound, polishing pad and cloths. Most of these kits can be used by hand or on electric polishers, depending on your preference and the type of glass you’re repairing. When you’re done, a lint-free cloth soaked in lukewarm water will remove any remaining paste and reveal pristine glass.
