What is interesting though is that despite these anti-counterfeiting campaigns, the discussion around fakes remains polarized. Some horologists argue that people are buying fake watches because they are cheaper than buying the original. Others argue that these people aren’t really buying a Rolex, they are buying the brand story and status symbol of a Rolex.

Whatever the truth of the matter, it is clear that fakes aren’t going away any time soon. This is because counterfeiters are getting better at it, and thanks to advancing technology (not to mention the fact that many of these factories making fakes also make legitimate watch parts), some of these look-alikes are now nearly indistinguishable from the genuine article.
